You just pull into a safe service station or a quiet rest stop, pull the blackout blinds down, and everyone can have a proper lie-down and sleep.

• The Onboard Loo: Yes, most modern campervans have a toilet on board! This is an absolute lifesaver for midnight bathroom emergencies or when you are stuck in traffic.

• The Homely Vibe: When you park up for the night, you can set up the awning to get out of the sun, put out your outdoor tables and chairs, and hang up the mozzie nets. It feels incredibly homely. You aren’t just visiting a place; you are living there, even if it’s just for a night.

3. Campsite Life: You Aren’t “Roughing It”!

If you are worried about facilities, don’t be. European campsites are incredibly well-appointed. Many of the top family sites in France, Spain, and Italy are basically holiday resorts.

The Smart Mum Hack: Fly cheaply to France, Germany, or Holland, and pick up your campervan there! This way, your driving experience is purely in the "holiday zone," and you skip the exhausting journey from the UK.

What about the bulky gear? Don't worry about leaving the bodyboards and surfboards behind. You can check them as special bulky luggage on the plane (which is often much cheaper than the fuel and tolls of driving all the way from the UK!). Once you have the van, the boot is massive, so you can load it up with beach toys, coolers, and sports equipment without worrying about airline weight limits for the rest of the trip.
